About Us

Our Story

Founded in 2014 by a small group of families living on Zanzibar’s southeast coast, SEC was created with a simple goal: to provide high-quality, nurturing education in a warm and inclusive setting. What began with just a few children has grown into a vibrant learning community of over 100 students from diverse backgrounds.

SEC is the founding project of South East Coast Educational Development (SECED), a registered NGO committed to offering accessible, high-quality international education to both international and local families living in Zanzibar. While the school is our largest and most successful initiative, SECED is more than just a school—it is a community-driven project with a heart for service and connection.
We are proud to contribute meaningfully to the local area through education and outreach.

At SEC, we believe that every child deserves to feel known, supported, and inspired. Our small class sizes and personalised approach help learners thrive in an environment rooted in care, curiosity, and respect. Together, we are not only growing a school—we’re building a community that gives back.

Sustainability & Outreach

Our Community

At South East Coast Educational Development (SECED), we believe that education is just one part of building a stronger, healthier, and more sustainable Zanzibar. Our commitment goes beyond the classroom to support the broader community through programs and partnerships that reflect our core goals:

  • Sustainable Development: We collaborate with local partners to support projects that promote long-term well-being and economic opportunities for families in southern Zanzibar.

  • Enhancing Health and Well-being: Through health education initiatives and collaborations with local health services, we strive to improve the well-being of children and their families, promoting healthy lifestyles and access to care.
  • Providing Inclusive, Quality Education: Our school welcomes children from diverse backgrounds and abilities, ensuring that every learner has access to personalised, high-quality education in a nurturing environment.
  • Supporting Gender Equality: We actively support government and community efforts to promote gender equality, helping to create opportunities and a safe, respectful environment for all children and adults.
  • Protecting Our Environment: Recognising the importance of Zanzibar’s natural beauty and resources, we lead environmental projects focused on preventing marine pollution and promoting sustainability.

Together with our students, families, and partners, SECED strives to build a community where everyone can thrive—rooted in care, respect, and shared responsibility for a brighter future.

Guiding Our visi0n

Board Of Trustees

The Board of Trustees at South East Coast International School Zanzibar (SEC) is the legal and authorising body of the school. SEC is the largest project of the NGO South East Coast Educational Development (SECED), and the Board consists of a minimum of five parent volunteers elected by members to govern the school. The Board includes roles such as Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary, and Member.

This dedicated group guides and supports the school’s mission to provide nurturing, inclusive, and high-quality education. Bringing together diverse skills and experiences, the Board works closely with school leadership to ensure SEC remains a caring community where every child is valued and supported.
The Board appoints the Head of School, who is entrusted with leading the school’s academic programs and day-to-day management. While the Board focuses on strategic oversight, it allows the Head of School to manage daily operations independently, intervening only when significant policy issues arise. The Board sets clear goals and regularly reviews progress to ensure the school stays aligned with its mission.

Beyond governance and academic standards, the Board champions SEC’s core spirit of care, inclusivity, and growth. Their leadership ensures that SEC not only delivers quality learning but also strengthens its role as a community-driven initiative of SECED.

Supporting our goals

Parent Teacher Association

The PTA at SEC plays a valued role in strengthening the bond between families and the school. Made up of parent volunteers, the PTA helps organise school events, support fundraising initiatives, and foster a welcoming, inclusive community spirit. Their involvement enhances school life for all students and offers a vital channel for collaboration between parents, teachers, and leadership.
