Art & Design Technology

Intent

At SEC, we believe that art and DT are a vital and integral part of a child’s education. They provide the children with opportunities to develop a range of ways in which they can express and share their individual creativity.

It is our aim, through the art and DT curriculum, to provide the children with the skills and knowledge to experiment with different types of media and create their own works of art, craft and design.

The art and DT curriculum will develop children’s key skills and understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through studying a diverse range of male and female artists and designers throughout history.

Implementation

At SEC, we teach a skills-based art and DT curriculum, which allows children to express their creative imagination as well as providing them with opportunities to practise and develop mastery in the key processes of art and DT. These key art and DT skills, are supported through our creative curriculum and by making links with the topics being studied. The curriculum will show progression of skills across all key stages within the strands of art and DT.

We teach art and DT through our specialist art teacher: Rafael, through weekly sessions or art days. We also use whole school art projects to celebrate the arts and embed skills across the different areas of art and DT. The focus during art and DT sessions is on key skills and having opportunities to experiment with a range of processes. The children will be encouraged to be self-critical, self-motivated and to develop the ability to solve problems.
