Foundation Two Curriculum Information
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Throughout the school year we spend time focusing on children’s PSE development, we do this in a variety of ways such as circle time. The children are encouraged to develop and use their independent and self-help skills.
Physical Development
The children in F2 will have PE twice per week with our Judo champion ‘Abdul’. As well as PE sessions children will take part in group activities designed to develop the muscles to enhance their gross and fine motor skills.
Communication and Language
For children to become successful learners it is vital for them to speak and communicate effectively and be able to listen to others. We aim to develop and enhance these skills through daily speaking and listening activities such as role-play and circle time, discussions, signing and rhyme time.
Literacy
- Jolly phonics
- Reading
- Writing
Each week the children take part in a range of reading activities, including whole class big book work, guided reading groups and individual reading. Your child will take part in daily phonics lessons to develop their phonological awareness and knowledge of letters. We encourage the children to develop their writing skills through all activities in F2. Each week your child will be encourages to complete at least one piece of focused, supported writing. Within these sessions we explore the different forms of writing, for examples sentence structure, list writing, instructions and labels.
Mathematics
F2 follows ‘White Rose’ maths scheme of work. We begin the year by concentrating on counting objects reliably and saying number names in the correct order. Each week we will explore a number in depth starting with one. The children will learn different ways to represent the numbers and different places they might find them. The children will also extend this knowledge by thinking about different ways of making the numbers (number bonds) and also one more and one less than a number. Alongside our number work the children will explore, shape, space patterns and measurements. From the beginning we encourage the children to see the big part that mathematical knowledge plays in their everyday lives. Real life maths and problem solving will therefore happen on a daily basis.
Understanding the World
The children will be given lots of opportunities to explore a wide variety of materials and objects using all of their senses as appropriate. They will be encouraged to talk about their likes and dislikes, giving reasons for their choices. We will be learning about our families and the people and places that are important to us. We will explore topics such as animals. oceans, real-life heroes. The children will be shown how information can be obtained from a variety of sources including books, photographs, handling materials, using the tablet/internet and of course, drawing on their own experiences.
Express Arts and Design
We will provide the children with countless wonderful opportunities to explore colour, texture, shape, form and space. They will be encouraged to respond to what they see, hear, taste, smell and touch in a variety of ways. Children love songs and rhymes and we will spend time listening to songs and learning new rhymes, often using instruments to help develop their rhythmic skills. We are fortunate to have our art specialist ‘Teacher Rafa’ who will work with the children once a week to produce beautiful artwork and practise their fine motor skills. In addition to this, we have the super talented DCMA visiting school on a Monday and they will be encouraging children to express themselves musically through using voice, rhyme, rhythm and a variety of musical instruments.
How can I help my child?
Spend time each day, if possible, sharing stories with your child. Encourage them to talk about the stories you read, the characters, setting and predicting what might happen next. You can also access the documents saved below which will give you ideas on how to develop their reading, writing and mathematical skills at home and in everyday life.
